Today I'm coming atcha with this quick easy peasy tutorial on how to refill your Bath & Body Works Wallflower bulbs.

If you are like me, you are TOTALLY in love with all things Wallflower from Bath & Body Works. No joke I could spend an entire commission from a wedding shoot on wallflowers and their accessories. And that's saying something.

Lately, business has been slow, we spend a boat load -- see what I did there -- of cash on the cruise and a IDK if I mentioned this or not, but my husband had a serious accident and dislocated his elbow just over a month ago, so we've got the medical bills pouring in. So we are trying to really watch our nickels and dimes, more than usual. Just as fall weather started to kick in around our little rhelm here in south central Kentucky, I went ahead and purchased refills for my 4 wallflowers (Living Room, Kitchen,  Hallway, Bathroom) in the scent "LEAVES." It's my all time favorite fall fragrence from B&BW. I was so sad when we got back from vacation and saw that all of that pretty brown liquid had been used up. So I decided to wait a few weeks before buying actual LEAVES refills (gotta have them for Thanksgiving when we host some of my family!) and refill them myself. It is so super stinking easy. Let me share with you how to do it.

Ok, here's whatcha need:
Your Bulb
A Pair of pliers (I use needlenose)
A flat head screwdriver
Essential Oil (whatever scent you like best, I'm using lavendar)
Water
Patience

I don't include detailed step by step photos because it was more work taking the pictures than it is to just explain it. So here we go.....

HOW TO:
  1. Unplug your wallflower from the wall and unscrew your bulb.
  2.  Take your flat head screw driver and pry open the white plastic stopper. This could take some time, especially if it's never been "un-stopped" before.
  3. Use your pliers if you need to an help the stopper and the stem come out of the glass bulb.
  4.  Rinse out your stem using warm water. For Heaven's sakes watch out for the little nail at the top,                   that sucker is sharp. Be sure to rinse it out THOROUGHLY otherwise your scents will mingle. Not always a good thing.
  5. Squeeze out all of the water in the stem.
  6. Rinse out your glass bulb with warm water.
  7. Using your favorite scent of Essential Oil (I've been using lavendar) fill the bulb about 1/4th of the way up. Don't over use your Essential Oil, it's very strong.
  8. Fill the rest of the bulb up with water. Stop at the widest point of the bulb. You have to leave room for the stem and the stopper.
  9. Slide the stem back into the bulb and use your pliers to help slide the stopper back into place.
  10. Wipe everything down, screw the bulb back into the plug and plug it all back into the outlet.

I got all 4 plugs refilled in less than 5 minutes!

A  normal wallflower bulb refill costs $6.50. Or you can get a 2 pack for $12.50. The essential oil I use is by Eden's Garden (you can also get a 6 pack of different scents for like $19.99, all at Amazon.com) and costs $6.25 for the bottle. It is a 10 ml bottle. I've already refilled all 4 of my bulbs twice using the Essential Oil and haven't even used a 3rd of the bottle yet. It's a terrific way to save some $$ and keep your house smelling yummy all at the same time. I still buy the refills from B&BW, especially if they are having a $3.00 sale (can't pass that up), but I mostly just buy them for the special occasions. If we are having a group of people come over, holidays, etc. For every day useage I'm perfectly content using the DIY method and refilling my bulbs.

Hope you all enjoyed this little tutorial and use it sometime soon. I'm already enjoying the cozy scent of Lavendar and I just refilled them 10 minutes ago! Let me know what scents you come up with! Thanks for stopping by!

Happy DIYing!!
Missy

*** I'm not being perked by Bath & Body Works, Eden's Garden or Amazon.com to praise their products, I JUST LOVE THEM!

  1. HI there,
The essential oil and water did not work for me because it only lasted a day.
Then I tried essential oil and cooking oil and it was too thick.
I tried essential oil and rubbing alcohol and it burned up even faster, than water.

I did not want to pour a whole bottle of essential oil into a blub next cause all the ast experiments have been fails....

Has anybody already fought this battle and won?
    If so please do tell.

    1. I did find that with certain ones of my wallflowers I burned through the mix faster than others. The one in my bathroom burns through in a day, the one in my living room burns through slower at about 2 weeks and the ones in my hallway and kitchen burn through in about a week. So, with those results I can't tell if it's my mix or my actual wallflowers. I'll keep testing and if I come up with something that lasts I'll post an update!

    2. can you use fragrant oils as well as essential oils?

    3. I've never tried it with fragrant oils. That might work!

    4. I'm having the same issue. They last about 2 days, so they end up costing more than the wallflowers :(

    5. yes..there is a base that I bought from a candle making company (Candle Science I believe) that you mix with essential oils so they burn longer. I can't remember what it is called cause Im moving and packed it up.

    6. That's it...I think it is called a carrier oil!

  2. I put this oil in a medical bottle to get the oil out and it works but I got some on my medicine and if I take it will I get sick? I can taste it in my pills.

  3. I think I would use a carrier oil instead of water to use with my essential oil. Maybe olive oil or jojoba so it will last a little longer. I have yet to try this though. Thanks for the tutorial! :)

  4. I have yet to try this (looking forward to!) but maybe mix the essential oil with a carrier oil. They are unscented and might mix well with the essential oil and burn slower. :)

  5. Can I refill it with perfume? I have just enough of my favorite perfume to refill it but I didn't know if it was flammable or not.

    1. I wouldn't. Perfume is generally flammable.

  6. MANY WALLFLOWERS OR GLADE PLUG INS HAVE A "open or close" setting.
    Adjust yours.
    Move it away from heat!!
Such as hair dryers, Windows, high wattage bathroom lights, inner walls, especially ceiling fans. Fans dry them out faster as do lights and hairdryers.
    ALSO,
make sure you are using a LOW CONCENTRATED rubbing alcohol!
    Below 30% is best.
Most stores sell 2-4 kinds including the peppermint and cinnamon.
DO NOT USE THE SCENTED RUBBING ALCOHOL these scented chemicals do cause cancer as do scented candles.
It is better to use a WAX MELTER, or bamboo sticks in essential oil.
Try to use food grade oils. NOT PLAIN SCENTED OILS.
Food grade is best for your health.

  7. It would have been helpful to know that unscrewing the bulb is a RIGHT HANDED THREAD and screwing it back is reverse. For those that didn't understand...when unscrewing the bulb you have to turn it to the RIGHT...not the standard (like unscrewing a light bulb) to the left.

    1. I was trying to figure out why they used a left handed thread. I suspect it is so people don't screw light bulbs in the socket instead of the refill. But that's just a guess.

  8. What about witch hazel?

  9. I just tried baby oil with 5 drops of Geranium and 6 drops each of Lavender Essential oils. Doing well so far and is putting out scent. I think the baby oil is not heavy and will not evaporate too quickly.

    1. When I used baby oil IT DID NOT WORK AT ALL. Left it plugged in for 2 weeks - no scent and no lowering of level of oil in bulb.

    2. Same here, also tried Almond oil, Grapeseed oil, fractionated Coconut oil and Canola oil --NONE of them worked.

  10. I have no idea if this is correct, but I heard the scents run out faster if plugged in an outlet that something else is plugged into...

  11. can you add voldka to the essentials and water to make them last longer in the wildflower refill

    1. Have you tried this (Vodka with essential oil)? Im gonna try it tonight!

    2. I wouldn’t use vodka or any other liquor, it’s flammable.

  14. I am using fractionated coconut oil and essential oils to refill my Wallflower bulb. After about a week the bulbs are still full and they don't smell as much as the originals. Am I doing something wrong?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nope - fractionated coconut oil DOES NOT WORK. I have tried it and baby oil, neither works. I would REALLY like to know what oil or carrier is used by Bath and Body Works.

    2. Agree, I tried using fractionated unscented coconut massage oil as the carrier oil with added fragrance concentrates, but it doesn't work. No scent comes out despite weeks plugged in.

  19. I've read several tutorials that use water but the scent doesn't last very long, wouldn't a carrier oil be better for preserving the scent for longer?
Is using a carrier oil in a wallflower safe?

  23. What are compatible oils you can use for the Wall Flower outlet besides going to Bath and Body works?

  24. Thank you for the tip! I tried this and unfortunately the bottle of water and essential oils ran out after a day. I'm lazy and don't want to refill this daily, so I'm giving 'DiPropylene Glyco' (USP Food and Pharmaceutical Grade) a try instead of water. This can be found on Amazon.

The ratio I found is 3:7 so I'll try that to see how it works. "The basic ratio for perfume is three essential oils to seven parts dipropylene glycol, fragrance grade."

    Thanks again!

  25. I used Pier One's diffuser oil. It works great and lasts quite a while. It's a shame you can't buy it anymore - at least the fragrances I always use.

  26. Missy, I think that is wonderful that you are taking care of your mama. I just lost my father in law in December and I had took care of him for 3 years. It was such a blessing to be able to spend as much time with him as I did 24/7. Big shout out to you. Hope you have a blessed day.

  27. You might want to try Polysorbate 20 (or Polysorbate 80 if your essential oil is thick or resinous, like patchouli). To make a fragrance mist, You generally start with one part PS 20 to one part eo/fo to one part DISTILLED water.
I've never tried wallflowers so I'm not sure if it will work but you can pick up PS 20 at places like Brambleberry or From Nature With Love. Good luck!
